The next release in our mission to add whole collections of rarely seen sudoku variants is ARROW SUDOKU:
http://www.puzzle-magazine.com/arrow-sudoku-magazine.php
As ever you can print the first page and try four puzzles to see if it is for you or not.
It's highly likely most of you won't have come across this puzzle type before, so here's the recommended audience:
- Anyone who enjoys trying new sudoku variants
- Anyone who likes a challenging puzzle!
- Not afraid of a little maths (only addition required)
If that's you, give it a go

Definitely one for me! I have downloaded it already even though I still have about 50 consecutive sudokus and 30 ABC puzzles left to do (nice to mix things up a bit!). I HAVE come across this variation before but only ever seen the odd one or two so great to have a whole lot of them. Will let you know how I get on, but got to go to work now!!!!

Hi Christine
Thanks, I think that was the quickest ever downloading of a new magazine
Hope you like the puzzles... I think they'll probably be slower to solve than most sudoku variants so they will hopefully last you a while. Would definitely be interesting to hear how you get on with them in due course!

Hi, yes, it didn't take me long to download that magazine - I am a bit of an addict when it comes to puzzles - have to have them straight away even if they stay on my 'to do' pile for a while!!
I am really enjoying the arrow sudoku although I'm definitely finding them quite challenging. I've only managed to complete 4 of the first 8 puzzles in the collection so far, have drawn a blank on the others, but I will go back to them. It will be interesting to see whether they come a bit easier with practise. It's finding a way in that's the difficult part. Of the ones I've managed so far it's taking a while to get started, but they have filled in nicely once the first few (time consuming) steps have been taken. Great fun (I think!)

Sounds like you're doing well!
One of the rules that is required in some puzzles that can be quite tricky to spot is region elimination using the arrows.
This says that if, whatever the actual combination, let's say a 4 has to appear somewhere along the path of an arrow, and that arrow is fully in another region (let's say a 3x3 box) then the 4 can be eliminated from all other cells in that box.
Certainly when I was solving them at any rate that was the one piece of logic that I most often missed and got stuck on... though it is isn't required in every puzzle it is on some of them.

Wow, this really is a fantastic puzzle as when I first mentioned it
One of the nicest and enoyable variants I have come across.
What a shame that you can't get puzzles like this in newspapers - I guess they're just not interested in things like arrow sudoku and other weird and wonderful sudoku variants, but people are missing out in my opinion!

Have you downloaded this collection Gemma? If so, I wonder how you are getting on? I'm having mixed success at the momemt, some I'm finding it difficult to get started on and others I have completed. I do prefer a challenging puzzle though to one where I can just sit down and fill the numbers in without much thought.
Thanks for the tip above Puzzlemags - will make sure i am doing that - am continuing to enjoy this collection - will keep me going for quite some time!

Pleased to hear you're enjoying the puzzles Gemma, it's one of my favourites at the moment too as I may have mentioned above.
Although the main purpose of this site is to have collections of single puzzles we'll probably create one with, say, 10 of each of 10 different sudoku variants at some stage so those who don't want an entire collection of one puzzle type can still enjoy the variety.

Hi Christine
I think I'm getting on about the same as you really... they certainly are quite challenging.
Like a lot of sudoku puzzles I find that the start is the hardest. But what I like about them is that the way they solve is very interesting -you really get the feeling that the different arrows 'interact' with each other if that doesn't feel silly; when you reduce the options for one it then sort of feeds into the other arrows and you can go around gradually reducing them.
I have done ten of the first twelve

I have not heard of this but I have just this second looked at the sample and it seems very hard there are not many given numbers! I will try the sample one on the way to work in the morning and see if I can do any of it!
