Nikoli Puzzles...By: Staceym [23-May-10 1:18PM] 83 posts |

Assuming it's OK to talk about other puzzle types on here, does anyone else use the Nikoli site?
Although I don't subscribe it's useful for finding out about new puzzle types, some of which make their way over here. There are also free samples of quite a few puzzle types so it is well worth a visit.
One of the puzzle types I've seen recently is another loop type puzzle that they call suraromu under their puzzles section:

It's a fairly simple one but nice to play.

Hi Stacey, I often go and have a look at the Nikoli site to see if there is anything new, and have tried quite a few of the sample puzzles. I've seen suraromu and found it quite a pleasant puzzle, but don't think it would become one of my favourites. I haven't subscribed to the site either.

I have seen their puzzles in the past, but I think they were mainly quite large ones.
I personally prefer smaller puzzles that don't take too long to complete...

I have recently tried this and enjoyed some of the puzzles.
However they tend to be too big for me - really large puzzles put me off I'm afraid

Thanks for the replies. Interesting to hear that you have been to the site too Christine.
I wonder if they will ever produce magazines in English and place them in the shops over here? I suppose perhaps there is much less interest as has been discussed in other posts here for the sorts of Japanese puzzles then there is in their home market, so perhaps it would not be possible for them do it from a practical and financial point of view.
Personally I would be very happy if they produced a sort of mixed puzzle book over here with lots of loop puzzles and other logic puzzles in it, although I think I am resigned to the fact that most people would rather just do dull wordsearch, crosswords and celebrity arrowwords in this country: or so it would seem from what is on the shelves at least.
