Mosaic puzzles...By: Martha [7-January-10 3:23PM] 19 posts |

Not been here for a few weeks so good to see that there are some interesting puzzle related conversations here, I will definitely check out some of the puzzles mentioned in the posts that I've not come across previously!
Another of the puzzles that I enjoy is one that is usually called Mosaic.
The way this one works is that you have a grid which can be of any size, but is always rectangular or square.
The grid contains lots of numbers, though some of the squares do not contain any numbers at all.
The aim of the mosaic is to work out whether each square in the grid should be shaded in or not. At the end of the puzzle every square is either shaded or must be blank. As a further piece of interest, the shaded cells reveal an image in black and white is great fun!
It is a bit like the minesweeper game in that the numbers tell you how many squares around the number are to be shaded, however unlike in minesweeper the square that contains the number itself may be shaded as well as touching horizontal, vertical and diagonal squares. This means that the highest number is 9, the lowest number of course is 0.
It's great fun but pretty hard to come across: could we have some mosaic puzzles on here please?

So is anybody else interested in mosaic puzzles or is it just me!
There was a free one on the newsletter from here the other week which I enjoyed very much, but it was trickier than the other ones that I have played in the past.
You had to do a lot of cross referencing but it was very fair. I like the fact that you can stare at an area for a few minutes with mosaic puzzles then suddenly see a key move and lots of cells can be shaded or crossed out as a result: there is very satisfying bits of logic that can be used to solve mosaic puzzles in other words!

Hi Martha
Sorry for the slow reply not been on here for a while.
Mosaic puzzles are also one of my favourite puzzle types but they are hard to come by.
There are a couple that appear in a bi-monthly magazine that has some sudoku variants in it and other picture based number/logic puzzles, but otherwise I'm not aware of anything.
I've certainly never seen a collection of just mosaic puzzles in the UK anywhere.
So I too would be very keen indeed to see a mosaic puzzles magazine, that would be fantastic

Just an update on the Mosaic puzzles following the requests earlier this year - they are one of the puzzles on the list for the next Variety Puzzles Magazine which I would anticipate will contain around ten of these.

Great - I enjoy mosaic puzzles but wouldn't necessary want a whole 100 of them so to see them included in the next variety mag is great. I don't know whether you have already decided on all the content, but as you asked for requests in another thread (can't find it now) it would be great to see any of the following - more consecutive sudoku, binary puzzles, hidoku, minesweeper. Just suggestions!
