Another puzzle type that I really like is the minesweeper puzzle like in the windows game.
Basically you have a grid and some numbers in it and you need to work out where the mines are.
This is worked out by the fact that the numbers show how many mines are next to that square, including the diagonals, not including the square itself. So for instance a 4 would mean that there are four squares adjacent that contain mines.
The hard puzzles provide a nice but fair challenge - like most puzzles they become rubbish if you have to guess basically to work out the solution.
A fun variant of the minesweeper puzzle is then the one that is called mosaic that I think I have only seen in one magazine, here you have the same rules as minesweeper except that the mines can be in the square itself that contains the 4 for instance - and you colour in the squares rather than draw the mine because the nice touch is that the filled squares form a basic image at the end.
So perhaps we could have a minesweeper puzzle magazine? I guess that the mosaic puzzles take quite some time to create so maybe also include a few of those. As our Christmas present perhaps?
Sandwich Sudoku Rules A lovely sudoku variant, sandwich sudoku gives you hints around the edge of the grid as to the location of the 1 and 9 in each row and column. This video explains the rules so you can have a go at this fun but tricky variant...
