Notation used whilst solving puzzles...

Hi there

I thought I would post about the techniques people use whilst solving puzzles to mark down the various options.

I am sure that most of us, apart from with really easy puzzles, make little notes whilst we are solving puzzles to help us keep track of where we are with them.

Since one of the most well known puzzles is sudoku I thought I would start with that one.

What methods to people use to note down options? I think the most standard technique is pencilmarks whereby you write in little text in each cell the options for that cell so if it can be 2,3,4 or whatever then you write that in.

However what about at the level of regions? When it comes to these and there are not that many options I tend to write around the outside of the puzzle at the end of each row and column what the remaining options are. I find this option helps me make deductions at a glance rather than looking at each cell again whilst going through solving.

For the boxes I don't keep track of these but rather just look at them manually. What methods do other people use for helping them keep track whilst solving puzzles?
