This is a type of puzzle that requires you to work out a route around a grid, a so-called travelling puzzle or a journey puzzle. There are many types of travelling puzzle out there, and this is one of the most common ones.
It has appeared in various guises with slightly different rules for a long time; the rule for travelling around the grid used in the first 60 puzzles is how the king piece moves around the board in chess. This type of travelling puzzle (hidoku) appears under different names in newspapers and magazines; one of the most common is hidato.
The puzzle magazine also contains 40 of another popular travelling puzzle - the knights tour, or knights journey. In this type of travelling puzzle valid moves are those of the chess piece in knight, and you must work out each numbered step in the journey.
If you're unfamiliar with the puzzle there are rules on the actualy hidoku magazine page, and also some sample puzzles. The magazine has 100 puzzles, with 60 hidoku and 40 knights tour, in a range of grid sizes from 8x8 to 10x10.
